A dedication ceremony was held on Saturday, July 20, to mark the completion of a new Habitat for Humanity Buffalo home on the city’s East Side. The celebration welcomed new homeowners to the finished build that began in December through the joint support of Buffalo’s largest local healthcare provider and bank, Kaleida Health and M&T Bank.
“Through the continued support of organizations like Kaleida Health and M&T Bank, we’re able to make safe and affordable housing available to an increasing number of Buffalo residents,” said Teresa Bianchi, executive director of Habitat Buffalo. “Habitat Buffalo is proud to work with businesses and community leaders that share our commitment to growth, strength, and stability through homeownership.”
The newly dedicated house at 39 Winslow Avenue, located on Buffalo’s East Side, will soon be the new home of the Bashira family, who have been in Habitat Buffalo’s Homebuyer Program since 2017 and completed more than 500 hours of “sweat equity” into the home’s construction. Renovat Bashira and her husband, Scholastique, will live in the home with their four children.
Kaleida Health and M&T provided financial support for materials, labor and energy-efficient amenities for the house. Employees of both organizations also contributed hundreds of volunteer hours to make the build a success.
“Kaleida Health is committed to making a difference outside the walls of our hospitals, long-term care facilities and ambulatory sites. By partnering with others like M&T Bank and Habitat for Humanity, we are giving back to the community which has been so supportive of us over the past few years,” said Jody Lomeo, Kaleida Health president and CEO. “This has been such a rewarding project to be involved in and we are so happy to play a small part in making the home ownership dream come true today.”
“We at M&T truly believe that the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ is more than a slogan, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute time and energy on this worthy project with Kaleida Health and Habitat Buffalo,” said M&T Bank Chairman and CEO René Jones. “This has been a wonderful collaboration with Kaleida to invest in the future of this great city by supporting hardworking residents who are passionate about revitalizing their community, such as those on Buffalo’s East Side.”
The dedication was attended by the new homeowners, their family, Habitat Buffalo staff and Habitat volunteers, as well as staff and leadership from both Kaleida Health and M&T Bank.
